Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969) was a highly acclaimed expert of
several different martial arts before he started developing
his own style in the 1920s. In respect of his great
achievements, a picture of him is displayed in most dojos all
around the world and usually he is referred to as 'O-Sensei'
('Great Teacher'). He died at the age of 86 and taught aikido
until shortly before his death.
Basis of Aikido
Aikido is an effective means of self-defense and an excellent training for the body and mind. But it is more than that, it is also friendly and non-aggressive. The emphasis is not on the destruction of an opponent, but on establishing harmony between you and an attacker. The movements are circular and aim to control your partner, rather than hurt them. Unlike other martial arts, Aikido does not require a high level of fitness and is suitable for all people
