Takase Shihan and Shinryukan
Nobuo Takase Shihan
Takase Shihan was born in 1947, Himeji, Japan. His aikido career began when he was studying at Kogakkan University in Ise, Japan, more than 45 years ago. During his early aikido years, his teachers were Chiba, Kanai, Ichihashi and Watanabe Shihan as well as Ō-Sensei the founder of Aikido. He has also received instruction from other senior Shihan in Japan. The young Takase Shihan (age 22) emigrated to New Zealand in 1969 with the intention of introducing the art of Aikido here. “Shihan” is the title given by the World Aikido Headquarters to a master instructor or "professor" of Aikido. Takase Shihan was presented with this title by the third Doshu, Moriteru Ueshiba. He is the only person to hold this senior title in New Zealand. Accordingly he is the World Aikikai Foundation representative for New Zealand. Takase Shihan is also the New Zealand representative of the World Aikido Headquarters Tokyo Japan. He currently holds the rank of Aikikai 7th Dan.
Takase Shihan is currently based in Auckland, where he instructs at the Shinryukan hombu dojo. Takase Shihan, is the chief instructor of Aikido Shinryukan and technical director for New Zealand Aikikai. In 2010 Takase Shihan celebrated his 40th year in New Zealand, and commemorated this with a seminar attended by numerous guest instructors including as guest of honour, Waka sensei, the third Doshu’s son.
Aikido Shinryukan is the Aikido organisation established by Takase Shihan in 1984 to provide direction and leadership for the development of Aikido in New Zealand. Since that time, Shinryukan has spread throughout not only New Zealand but to other countries also. Aikido Shinryukan provides the headquarters for the New Zealand Aikikai Federation, the national body for Aikido. Shinryukan training centres or dojos can be found throughout New Zealand.
